Healthy Kids Colorado Survey - Local Survey Effort

The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS) focuses on priority health-related behaviors that are often established during childhood and adolescence. The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS) instrument contains items from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (from the Centers for Disease Control), Risk and Protective Factor Scales (based on Hawkins and Catalano’s model), and asset and resiliency scales. The instrument's development has been supported and approved by a number of Colorado state agencies including the Departments of Education, Public Health and Environment, Human Services (Division of Behavioral Health), and Public Safety (Division of Criminal Justice, Office of Adult and Juvenile Justice Assistance).

Benefits of obtaining HKCS data include:

·  Providing data to support funding requests

·  Creating school health teams for program planning

·  Coordinating prevention messages

·  Implementing district and school wellness policies and programs

·  Enforcing tobacco-free and drug-free school policies

·  Monitoring changes in student behavior over time

Participating schools will be able to receive user-friendly survey reports that are easy to read.  Reports can be provided at the school, district, and community levels.
